Etang Noir nature reserve is the home to a mosaic of habitats, including small ponds which are scattered around to the east of the Aquitaine coastline. These ponds are prisoners of the dunes.
Following periods of glaciation and the gradual rise in sea level, a dune ridge was formed under the action of swell and wind. These dunes blocked the flow of water and allowed the formation of ponds and marshes in the back dune littoral. The black pond owes its name to its depth, its muddy bottoms and the shade provided by the trees on the bank. It is fed by streams which, before reaching the pond, meander through the swamp forest.
Various environments, sheltering species of heritage interest, are juxtaposed all around the pond, which is dominated by swamp forest. This natural habitat has many advantages: refuge and food for a large number of species (otter, European mink, European pond turtle …)
The mosaic of habitats is completed by areas of peat bog (sheltering among others the round-leaved sundew), areas of wet meadows and mixed woodlands of pine and oak.
Fauna and flora inventories are carried out and regularly updated. For example, 30 species of odonates, 112 species of birds, more than 200 plant species have been counted in the nature reserve.
The European mink, the populations of passerines, the European pond turtle, the marsh hibiscus are part, among others, of the species which are more particularly studied on the reserve because of their rarity.
